Dejima, also Deshima, small artificial island in Nagasaki Harbor, Japan, western Kyūshū Island, part of Nagasaki Prefecture. Now lined by modern docks, the island was important as a Dutch trading post from 1641 to 1859, when Japan was otherwise closed to foreign trade.
