Tuamotu Archipelago

Tuamotu Archipelago, island group of French Polynesia, lying east of Tahiti, in the eastern South Pacific Ocean. The group comprises 80 atolls extending, in two parallel chains, over a distance of 1,400 km (870 mi). The principal islands are Rangiroa, Fakarava, Hao, and Makemo. Products include phosphates, pearls, and copra. Several of the islands are used by the French for nuclear testing. The islands came under French protection in 1844 and were annexed in 1880.
