Taconite
Encyclopedia Article
Taconite, hard, flintlike sedimentary rock of chemical origin, rich in particles of the red iron oxide, hematite, and the black iron oxide, magnetite. It is a commercially valuable but low-grade iron ore. The rock is named after the Taconic Range, lying on the borders of New York, Massachusetts, and Vermont. A major deposit of taconite is found in the Mesabi Range in Minnesota. Deposits of a similar ore called itabirite are found in Brazil.
