Encyclopedia Article
William Chambers (1723-96), English architect, who worked in neoclassical and Chinese styles. After gaining repute for his Designs of Chinese Buildings (1757), based on his travels in China, and his Civil Architecture (1759), he held a number of government architectural posts. He practiced a refined neoclassicism with his design of Somerset House (1786), London, and other structures. His exotic Chinese pagoda in Kew Gardens (1763) helped inaugurate a European taste for chinoiserie.
