Blackleg
Encyclopedia Article
Blackleg, infectious disease of farm animals, characterized by subcutaneous swellings, especially in the legs. Caused by a bacterium, Clostridium chauvoei, the disease is confined almost entirely to cattle but has occurred in sheep, goats, camels, pigs, and horses. Blackleg was, until recently, generally confused with anthrax. The disease runs its course rapidly and is fatal in nearly all cases. Cattle between the ages of 6 months and 4 years are most susceptible. In many cases infection takes place through wounds, but more frequently it results from the consumption of infected feed or drinking water. Blackleg is found in nearly all countries of the world.
