Bayou (Louisiana French, from Choctaw bayuk,”small stream”), watercourse, usually the offshoot of a river or lake in a lowland area. It is a sluggish or stagnant creek, frequently flowing through swampy terrain. The term is used mainly in the U.S. states on the Gulf of Mexico and especially in the delta region of the Mississippi River.
