Windows Live® Search Results Los Alamos National Laboratory, research facility in Los Alamos, New Mexico, where the first atomic and hydrogen bombs were developed. The laboratory is funded by the United States Department of Energy and operated by the University of California. When it was founded in 1943, the laboratory was devoted solely to weapons development.
