Windows Live® Search Results Legion of Honor, French order of merit instituted by Napoleon in 1802. The order is conferred upon men and women, either French or foreign, for outstanding achievements in military or civil life. Its five classes of awards, in descending order of distinction, are grand cross, grand officer, commander, officer, and chevalier or knight.
