Chari or Shari, river of the Central African Republic and Chad. It is formed by the Bamingui and Gribingui rivers 169 km (105 mi) west of Ndélé in northern Central African Republic, and flows northwest for 950 km (590 mi), joining with the Logone River at N'Djamena in Chad and entering Lake Chad in a wide delta. It is the chief affluent of Lake Chad. Navigation for small river steamers is possible only at certain times of year.
