Charles II (of Spain)
Encyclopedia Article
Charles II (of Spain) (1661-1700), king of Spain (1665-1700). He was the son of Philip IV. Spain was controlled by a regency during the decade of his minority and then alternately by French or Austrian factions in his court. During his reign Spain rapidly declined as an international power. Charles willed the throne to Philip of Anjou, the grandson of Louis XIV of France, thus precipitating the War of the Spanish Succession (1701-1714).
