South Shields

South Shields, large town, South Tyneside Borough, metropolitan county of Tyne and Wear, northeastern England. South Shields is a seaport and a resort, located at the mouth of the Tyne River on the North Sea. Its manufactures include machinery, steel goods, and ships. Nearby is the excavated site of the Roman station of Arbeia, which was established in about ad80. The modern town was founded in the 13th century. Population. (1991) 83,704.
