Encyclopedia Article
Marabouts, members of an ascetic Muslim order in North Africa residing in ribats, or monasteries, and held in veneration by the Berbers. They are successors to the powerful Almoravids, who ruled Morocco, part of Algeria, and Spain in the 11th and 12th centuries. The term marabout also designates a shrine in which a particularly holy man is buried.
