Rondo, musical form in which a principal theme alternates with contrasting themes or episodes. In the 17th century, French composers such as Jean Baptiste Lully wrote pieces en rondeau that had the format A B A C A D ... A. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and other 18th-century composers often used a rondo in the format A B A C A B A as the concluding movement of a symphony, concerto, or instrumental sonata.
