Mallorca (also Majorca), island, eastern Spain, the largest of the Balearic Islands, in the Mediterranean Sea. In the northwest are mountains, reaching 1,000 to 1,500 m (3,300 to 4,900 ft) in height. Farming, mining, and fishing are major occupations. Marble, copper, and lead are the chief minerals mined. Mallorca is a popular resort. Area, 3,624 sq km (1,399 sq mi); population (2001) 676,516.
