Edward de Baliol (flourished 1314-1364), king of Scotland (1332-1356), son of King John de Baliol. He lived on the family estates in Normandy (Normandie) until 1324, when Edward II invited him to England in the hope of putting him on the Scottish throne. Baliol was not crowned king, however, until after the death of Robert I, then the reigning king of Scotland. By that time, Edward III had acceded to the English throne. Baliol won a military victory against the Scottish nobles in 1332 and was crowned king of Scotland at Scone. His reign was marked by constant warfare with the Scottish nobility and by frequent flights to England and the protection of Edward III. In 1356 Baliol surrendered the kingdom of Scotland to Edward III. After his day the house of Baliol became extinct. The name is also spelled Balliol.
