Bassano
Encyclopedia Article
Bassano, family of 16th- and early 17th-century Venetian painters. The most important member, Jacopo da Ponte, called Jacopo Bassano, born in Bassano del Grappa about 1510, painted portraits and biblical and mythological scenes. His early Mannerist works used elongated figures and brilliant color. Later work, influenced by Titian and Tintoretto, was darker and more dramatic, as in the Crucifixion (1592, Museo Civico, Treviso). His sons Francesco, Gerolamo, Giovanni Battista, and Leandro were genre painters.
