Dermatitis, inflammation of the true skin, or derma. The term is often used interchangeably with eczema, which refers more specifically to certain noncontagious diseases of the skin. The inflammation may be caused by parasites or by physical or chemical irritants. Streptococcus or Staphylococcus infections of the skin are examples of bacterial dermatitis. Sunburn is a common example of dermatitis resulting from the action of the radiation of the sun on the skin. See Skin.
