Port Sudan, city, northeastern Sudan, on the Red Sea. The only seaport of Sudan, it handles most of the foreign trade of the country. It is a commercial and shipping center for the rich cotton-growing regions of the valley of the Nile River. The principal exports are live cattle and sheep, hides and skins, gum arabic, and cotton. Port Sudan was founded in 1906 as a modern harbor to replace Suakin, which had become obstructed by rapidly growing coral reefs. Population (1993) 305,385.
