André Le Nôtre
Encyclopedia Article
André Le Nôtre (1613-1700), French landscape architect, who formulated the grand style of French neoclassicism. His two masterpieces, the parks of the Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte and the Palace of Versailles, are characterized by highly formal arrangements: architectural features such as canals, fountains, statues, and ornamental urns; clipped trees and geometric flower parterres or terraces; and straight axial vistas, some stretching for kilometers. Le Nôtre set the style for all European landscape architecture until the end of the next century.
