Map of San Angelo

San Angelo, city, seat of Tom Green County, western Texas, on the Concho River; incorporated 1903. It became known for its large wool, mohair, and livestock markets. DeWitt (1825-1878) founded a trading post here soon after the establishment (1867) nearby of Fort Concho (now a museum). For the community that soon developed, DeWitt chose the name Saint Angela, probably for his wife Carolina Angela. In 1884 the name was changed to San Angelo. Population 73,240 (1980); 84,474 (1990); 88,439 (2000); 88,300 (2006).
