Magdalena, river in southwestern Colombia, rising in the Andes Mountains and flowing in a northerly direction for 1,540 km (957 mi) to the Caribbean Sea. Navigable for about 990 km (about 615 mi) upstream from the inland port of Honda to the Caribbean coast, the river is the principal route to the interior of Colombia. Below the rapids at Honda it is navigable for another 240 km (150 mi). The chief tributary is the Cauca River. The city of Barranquilla, situated on the Caribbean Sea near the mouth of the Magdalena River, is the leading seaport of Colombia.
