Daniel D. Tompkins. (1774-1825), vice president of the United States. Tompkins was a justice of the New York state supreme court from 1804 to 1807. As governor of New York (1807-13), he defended the state from invasion by the British during the War of 1812. From 1817 to 1825 he was vice president under President James Monroe.
