Massacre of Fort Mims

Massacre of Fort Mims, massacre of settlers in Alabama on August 30, 1813, during the Creek uprising. The settlers, numbering about 300 men, women, and children, gathered for protection within a temporary stockade near the junction of the Alabama and Tombigbee rivers, north of Mobile. A greatly superior force of Creek, commanded by William Weatherford, called Red Eagle, surprised the garrison and killed about 250 of the settlers. A monument now marks the site of the stockade.
