Basenji, breed of the domestic dog belonging to the hound group, also called the African barkless dog. Long known, the breed is clearly shown in ancient Egyptian works of art. Although it is barkless, it is not completely mute. Characteristics of the breed are upright ears; wrinkled forehead; moderately long legs; short, fine, lustrous hair; a tightly curled tail; and small size. The basenji weighs about 11 kg (about 24 lb) and is 43 cm (17 in) high at the shoulder. The color varies from black to reddish and is often mixed with white.
