Tuscarora, North American tribe of the Iroquoian linguistic family. They were originally a powerful tribe living in what is now North Carolina. In 1711 they began a war against British settlers who had been annexing Tuscarora territory and kidnapping their children and selling them into slavery. The Tuscarora were defeated in 1713; the remnants of the tribe fled north, settling mainly in present-day New York State, where they joined the Five Nations of the Iroquoian Confederacy about 1722. Today several hundred Tuscarora live on reservations in New York State and Ontario Province. In the 2000 U.S. census about 2,300 people identified themselves as Tuscarora only; an additional 1,400 people reported being part Tuscarora.
