RR Lyrae Star, type of variable star (see Star), used in the determination of distances in astronomy. The name derives from the prototype star discovered in the constellation Lyra. Variations in brightness of RR Lyrae stars generally range in magnitude from 0.5 to 1.5, and it has been determined that they all have about the same absolute magnitude. The presence of such a star in a galaxy or globular cluster, therefore, helps establish the distance from earth of the galaxy or cluster.
