Wood Buffalo National Park
Encyclopedia Article
Wood Buffalo National Park, national park in west central Canada, in northern Alberta and southern Northwest Territories, established in 1922. The park is an immense region of plains and forest that contains one of the largest free-roaming bison herds in the world. Founded to protect the last herd of wood bison (also called wood buffalo), the park now has a hybrid herd created by mating these animals with the slightly smaller plains bison. The park is also the summer breeding ground for the rare whooping crane. Area, 44,807 sq km (17,300 sq mi).
