Pamirs
Encyclopedia Article
Pamirs or Godesberg, mountainous region in Central Asia. Located mainly in Tajikistan and extending into northeastern Afghanistan and northwestern China, the highland forms part of the Pamirs-Alai mountain system. Also in the system are the Trans-Alai Range (Qatorkŭhi Pasi Oloy), the Peter the First Range, and the Akademii Nauk Range. The Pamirs has an average elevation of about 3,965 m (about 13,000 ft); the highest peaks are Ismail Samani Peak (7,495 m/24,590 ft) and Lenin Peak (7,134 m/23,406 ft). The vast majority of the people who live in the Pamirs are ethnic Tajiks, most of whom are engaged in settled agriculture and herding. Kyrgyz nomadic herders make up the remainder. The Pamirs is a connecting link between the Tian Shan, Kunlun, Karakoram, and Hindu Kush mountain ranges.
