Brazos, river, northern Texas, formed by the junction of the Double Mountain Fork and the Salt Fork. The Brazos flows southeast and empties into the Gulf of Mexico near Freeport. The river is 2,060 km (1,280 mi) long and drains an extensive area. It is navigable at all times for 64 km (40 mi) from the Gulf of Mexico to West Columbia, and during high water for a distance of 483 km (300 mi). Two large reservoirs north of Waco were formed by the construction on the river of the Possum Kingdom Dam and the Whitney Dam.
