Université de Montréal, autonomous, coeducational institution of higher learning, in Montréal, Québec, Canada. It was founded in 1876 and opened in 1878 as a branch of Université Laval. In 1920 it was given its autonomy by the provincial government.

Classes are conducted in French. The university includes faculties of architecture, arts, dental surgery, law, medicine, music, nursing, pharmacy, science of education, sciences, and theology, as well as affiliated specialized schools and institutes. The university awards degrees equivalent to bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees in the United States.

Research facilities of the university include centers for the study of language, economic development, zoology, transportation, mathematics, population, immunology, lexicology, and the aquatic environment. Graduates of the university include former Canadian prime minister Pierre Trudeau.
