Delmarva Peninsula, peninsula, about 290 km (about 180 mi) long, in Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia (hence its name), separating Chesapeake Bay from Delaware Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. The west coast is jagged and marshy; the east coast is regular and has sandy beaches. Fishing, poultry raising, truck farming, and tourism are the main industries. Dover, Delaware, and Salisbury, Maryland, are the chief communities on the peninsula. Delmarva is crossed at its neck by the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal.
