Frederick Burr Opper (1857-1937), American illustrator and cartoonist. Born in Madison, Ohio, Opper was associated with the weekly Puck from 1880 until 1899, when he joined the staff of the New York Journal. Noted for his sharp, witty drawings, he illustrated books by Bill Nye, Mark Twain, and Finley Peter Dunne, author of the Mr. Dooley series. Opper created the comic-strip characters Happy Hooligan, Alphonse, and Gaston.
