American University, private, coeducational institution in Washington, D.C. The school was originally a Methodist Church-related institution (see Methodism), and was chartered by the Congress of the United States in 1893. The university confers associate, bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees in a broad range of fields. Major academic divisions are the College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Communication, the School of International Service, the School of Public Affairs, the Kogod College of Business Administration, and the Washington College of Law.
