Windows Live® Search Results Sextus Propertius (50?-15? bc), Roman poet, born in Assisi. After studying law at Rome, he devoted himself to the writing of elegies, primarily on sensual love. The source of his inspiration was his mistress Hostia, whom he called Cynthia. Propertius composed four books of elegies. The first, published about 25 bc, deals almost entirely with his love for Cynthia. It brought the author instant recognition and the patronage and friendship of the statesman Maecenas. Of the remaining three books, two are devoted to love lyrics, but the last is diversified in subject matter.
