Charleston (dance)
Encyclopedia Article
Charleston (dance), American social dance to rhythmically syncopated music in 44 time. Danced as a solo, with a partner, or in a group, it is marked by turned-in knees and toes, shifts of weight from leg to leg, and exuberant kicks and movements of arms and hands. Originally a black folk dance in Charleston, South Carolina, and elsewhere, it has parallels with some West African and black Caribbean dance. It became a popular craze after it was featured in the black musical Runnin' Wild (1923).
