Red Bank, borough, Monmouth County, eastern New Jersey, on the Navesink River, near the Atlantic Ocean; incorporated as a borough 1908. It is a commercial and boating center. Nearby Fort Monmouth, a United States Army base, is a major employer. Located here is the Count Basie Theater; nearby historic structures include the Allen House (about 1750) in Shrewsbury. The borough was settled in 1665 and grew as a shipping port for the area's farm products. It was named in 1870 for the red soil on its riverbanks. Population 12,031 (1980); 11,844 (2000); 11,876 (2005 estimate).
