Dordogne, river, France, rising in the Auvergne Mountains, south of Monts Dore in central France. It flows west for 480 km (300 mi), through the departments of Corrèze, Lot, Dordogne, and Gironde to Bec d'Ambès, near Bordeaux in the southwest. There, along with the Garonne River, the Dordogne enters the Gironde estuary. The longest tributary of the Dordogne is the Isle River, which joins it at Libourne, the head of navigation for seagoing ships. More from Encarta
