Slave Coast, historical name for that section of the Gulf of Guinea coast of West Africa lying between the mouth of the Niger River on the east and the mouth of the Volta River on the west. It includes the coastal areas of present-day Nigeria, Benin, Togo, and eastern Ghana. Between the 17th and early 19th centuries the Slave Coast was the center of West African slave trading.
