Cook Inlet
Encyclopedia Article
Cook Inlet, bay of the Pacific Ocean, southern Alaska, separating the Kenai Peninsula from the Alaskan mainland. It is 240 km (150 mi) long and varies in width from 14 to 130 km (9 to 80 mi). Sudden storms, fog, and tidal variations of 9 m (30 ft) impede navigation at the northern extremity. From November to May the northern part is locked in ice. The inlet contains several islands, the largest of which, Augustine Island, has an active volcano. Anchorage is near the head of the inlet. Cook Inlet was entered in 1778 by the British explorer Captain James Cook.
