Llano Estacado (English Staked Plain), southern portion of the Great Plains, covering an area of 91,000 sq km (35,000 sq mi) in western Texas and eastern New Mexico. It is a flat, semiarid region, with an average elevation of 1,000 m (3,300 ft). The region contains productive petroleum and natural-gas deposits. The relatively fertile land supports both dry and irrigated methods of farming.
