Mohawk (river, New York), river, central New York, the principal tributary of the Hudson River. It flows southeast until, after a course of 240 km (150 mi), it enters the Hudson at Cohoes. It passes through the renowned Mohawk Valley. Utica, Rome, and Schenectady are the chief cities on its banks. Part of the river was included in the Erie Canal, now part of the New York State Canal System.
