Matterhorn, peak of the Alps in southwestern Switzerland, near the border with the Italian region of Valle d'Aosta. It rises to an elevation of 4,478 m (14,692 ft). In July 1865 a group led by British alpinist Edward Whymper was the first to scale the famous jagged peak.
