Orizaba, city, eastern Mexico, in Veracruz State. It lies in a fertile garden region of sugar plantations, about 1230 m (about 4030 ft) above the sea. It is a tourist resort and an industrial city, containing textile mills, breweries, and sugar refineries. The Technological Institute of Orizaba (1957) is here. The city was damaged by an earthquake in 1973. Nearby is Pico de Orizaba (Citlaltépetl), the highest peak in Mexico. Population (2008 estimate) 117,444.
