Sendai, city, Japan, capital of Miyagi Prefecture, eastern Honshū Island. Sendai is the seat of Tohoku University (1907) and Tohoku Gakuin University. Also of interest in the city are the ruined 17th-century castle on Aoba Hill, the Rinnoji horticultural park, and the Osaki Hachiman shrine, designated a national treasure. Matsu Island (Matsu-shima), an island that is one of the classic scenic sites of Japan, is nearby. Population (2008) 1,003,733.
