Windows Live® Search Results Sewall Wright (1889-1988), American geneticist, best known for his genetic studies of guinea pigs and for his research on evolution. He originated the mathematical theory of evolution stating that mathematical chance, as well as mutation and natural selection, affects evolutionary change. Wright was born in Melrose, Massachusetts, and educated at Lombard College (Galesburg, Illinois), the University of Illinois, and Harvard University. He was employed as an animal geneticist (1915-25) by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, taught (1926-54) zoology at the University of Chicago, and was a professor of genetics (1955-60) at the University of Wisconsin. He received the National Medal of Science in 1967.
