Tocantins, river of Brazil, formed in south central Goiás State by the confluence of two main headstreams. It flows north through Pará State and, after a course of 2,700 km (1,680 mi), widens into the Pará River, the southern distributary of the Amazon delta. Its principal affluent is the Araguaia, which joins it at the northern extremity of Goiás. More from Encarta
