Ellery Queen, pseudonym of two American writers, cousins who collaborated in writing detective fiction: Frederic Dannay (1905-1982) and Manfred B. Lee (1905-1971). In 1929 Dannay and Lee published their first detective story, The Roman Hat Mystery. Their success led them to make a career of detective-story writing. They created the highly popular detective Ellery Queen. Dannay and Lee's detective novels include The Dutch Shoe Mystery (1931), The Scarlet Letters (1953), and House of Brass (1968). They also edited anthologies of detective stories, including Ellery Queen's Mystery Parade (1968), and they founded Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine in 1941.
