Saône, river, France, an affluent of the Rhône River. It rises in northeastern France, in the Faucilles Mountains, flows southwest to Chalon-sur-Saône and then south, joining the Rhône at Lyon. The Saône River is navigable for 375 km (233 mi) of its 480 km (298 mi) length. It is connected by canals with the Mosel, Marne, Yonne, and Loire rivers.
