Encyclopedia Article
Celestite, mineral consisting of strontium sulfate, SrSO4, one of the principal sources of the element strontium. It is found as colorless, white, or faint blue orthorhombic crystals (see Crystal) that occur in hydrothermal vents, with calcite and quartz, and in sandstone, limestone, and pegmatites. It has a hardness of 3 to 3.5 and a specific gravity, or relative density, of 4. Celestite is found in Mexico, Spain, Turkey, Iran, China, England, the United States, and Canada.
