Point (geometry)

Point (geometry), an exact, fixed location; one of the basic building blocks of geometry. Points are zero-dimensional: They have no length, width, or depth. Many physical objects suggest the idea of a point. Examples include the tip of a pencil, the corner of a cube, or a dot on a sheet of paper.

The other basic building blocks of geometry consist of infinite points placed in specific formations. The set of points in a row suggested by a piece of string, stretched tightly, is called a line segment. A row of points that extends infinitely in one direction is a ray, and a row that extends infinitely in both directions is a line. Similarly, a plane is a set of points that make up a flat surface such as a floor.
